Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

At Sir John Offley we believe it is vital to incorporate SMSC development into our curriculum and whole school ethos, in order for children to develop and be able to live a fulfilling life in the future. 

Spiritual Development

Explore beliefs and experiences; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect. 

At SJO we promote this through: our Core Christian Values and our motto, Reflection areas in every classroom, our RE curriculum, The Fish project which explores the communities beliefs, Prayers at the Harvest, Christmas and Easter services, daily Collective worship, The School Prayer, Mindfulness club and activities and Nurture.

Moral Development

Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views and have an appreciation of British Values. 

At SJO we promote this through:  Right and Wrong – linked to British values, Use of behaviour traffic light system, Nurture, Think and Talk sheets, Reflection areas, use of School Council to make decisions, Awards and certificates, children sharing achievements to build self esteem, Attendance.

Social Development

Investigate social issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate; volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the fundamental values of British democracy. 

At SJO we promote this through:  the fish project which links with the local community, Collaborative work in class and debates, Lunchtime – eating together and socializing, Nurture, Pupil voice, Harvest parcels taken to local community, Choir singing for local people.

Cultural Development

Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s Parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

At SJO we promote this through:  Show box appeals, Newsround assemblies, RE curriculum, Geography curriculum, Comic relief, WW2 Remembrance, Comic relief.
