Governors

The Role of the Governors

The Governors are like a Board of Directors who make decisions about how the school is run. School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities.

They can only act together, not individually.  Some of their duties are listed below:

  • School governors are a team of people who work closely with the head teacher to set the vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school.  They engage with stakeholders, and ensure that statutory duties are met.
  • Governors provide both challenge and support to the Headteacher by asking searching questions about teaching, performance management of staff, achievement, behaviour and safety and holding them to account.
  • Governors monitor the impact of policies and oversee staffing and school budgets, ensuring effective management of financial resources, including the Pupil Premium, to raise standards.

The Governing Body at Sir John Offley CE VC Primary School is made up of representatives from the local authority, the staff, the parents, and the community. Parent and staff governors are elected from the relevant bodies arranged by the Head teacher. Community governors are nominated by the governing body as a whole and the LA nominate the education authority governors.

The Governors meet three times a year as a large group and then four subgroups meet each term.

Governors declare any pecuniary interests annually and at the beginning of each meeting.
